Explanation of  Common Computer Parts

RAM – This is the amount of memory in your computer that determines how many programs your computer can run at the same time.  The more ram you have, the faster these programs will run.  Higher end software like video editing suites or animation software requires larger amounts of RAM to function properly.

CPU – Basically the computer's brain; it basically executes the software instructions.  The faster the CPU speed, the faster your computer will go.  Most computers these days have what's called duel core, or quad core processors, which simply means that there is more than one CPU working at the same time.  This allows your computer to do more things simultaneously.

Hard Drive – This holds all your data.  This is how much music, videos, documents, etc. that you can fit on your computer.

Video Card – This is generally for people who want to play the latest games, record music, or edit videos.  Most computers now come with them built in, so if you're not going to be doing any of that fancy stuff, you don't really need one in your computer.
